Richard studied medicine at the University of Auckland trained as a kidney specialist in Newcastle and Perth. He has been in specialty medical practice since 2006. He is a Senior Staff Specialist in Renal (Kidney) Medicine at Canberra Hospital. At Canberra Hospital he is the medical lead for the renal weight management as well as the chronic kidney disease and home dialysis programs.

He has research and clinical interests in chronic kidney disease, blood pressure, medical kidney stone management and nutrition with several highly cited research papers published. He is currently a principal investigator for several kidney and cardiovascular outcome drug studies. He holds internationally recognised SCOPE certification in medical obesity management and aims to ensure that all of his patients receive optimal, timely care.
